This box has been created by hand, piece by piece, a true work of art not only because of the precious woods used in making it, but also for the exquisite creativity of its design and originality of its composition.

The art of inlay (marquetry) dates from the 15^th century and originated in “Sorrento”, a very romantic town located in the bay of Naples.  The technique has remained unchanged over the centuries.  Marquetry is created by layering various sheets of woods (veneer) of different colors, fastened one on top of the other.  The decorative pattern is drawn on the top layer.  The craftsman then uses a jigsaw to delicately cut the veneer piece by piece following the pattern.  The pieces that need shading are then placed in a hot sand bath for 10 seconds.  The pattern is then assembled and glued to the top of a previously crafted box.  The box is then sanded and finished with a special lacquer.
